EU statement on the 10th sanctions package against Russia

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has issued a statement previewing the tenth EU sanctions package against Russia.

In her statement, von der Leyen named further export bans under the sanctions package worth over 11 billion euros to cut off the Russian economy from critical technologies and industrial goods. These include important goods such as electronics, special vehicles, machine parts, spare parts for trucks and engines, as well as goods for the construction industry that Russia uses for military purposes, such as antennas or cranes.

Another goal of the sanctions package, according to von der Leyen, is to further restrict the export of dual-use goods and goods with advanced technology. For example, the EU foresees controls on 47 new electronic components that can be used for Russian weapons systems as well as drones, missiles and helicopters; certain rare earths and thermal imaging cameras are also to fall under these controls. In addition, sanctions against Iran will be expanded because the country supplies Russia with missiles that are used to attack civilian infrastructure.

In addition, the new sanctions target Russia's propaganda machine and oligarchs.

The new sanctions package is to come into force by the first anniversary of the Russian invasion, namely on 24 February.
