The European Parliament has approved the postponement of the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This gives affected companies one year more time to prepare for the requirements of the directive. Large companies must now meet the obligations of the EUDR from December 30, 2025, micro and small companies from June 30, 2026.
The European Parliament also adopted other amendments proposed by the political groups, including the creation of a new category of countries that pose “no risk” in terms of deforestation, in addition to the three existing categories of “low risk”, “normal risk” and “high risk”.
For countries that are assigned to the “no risk” category, i.e. countries with stable or increasing forest area development, significantly lower requirements apply, as the risk of deforestation is negligible or non-existent.
The amendments to the Regulation now require the approval of the European Commission and the Council. They will be renegotiated as part of the trilogue procedure. A compromise reached in these negotiations must then be approved by the Council and Parliament and will be published in the Official Journal of the EU.
