On 8 October 2024, the European Union announced a new sanctions framework designed to combat Russian activities aimed at destabilising other states and institutions. The aim is to combat Russian acts of sabotage, cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns and the instrumentalisation of migrants, for example. This is the EU's response to the sharp rise in the number of acts of sabotage attributed to the Kremlin.
The new sanctions framework is part of a comprehensive EU strategy to combat hybrid threats.
Individualssubject to the new sanctions will be subject to travel bans that prohibit them from entering or transiting through the territory of the EU.
Companies operating in the EU must ensure that they comply with the new sanctions regulations. This also includes carrying out due diligence checks to avoid doing business with sanctioned companies.
