Russia: EU adopts sixth sanctions package

The European Union was able to agree on a sixth sanctions package against Russia. The legislation on the latest EU sanctions package appeared in the EU Official Journal last Friday, 03.06.2022.

The EU has decided to ban the purchase, import or transfer of crude oil and certain petroleum products from Russia to the EU. The phasing out of Russian oil will take between six (crude oil) and eight months (other refined petroleum products).

In addition, the EU is extending the existing ban on the provision of special payment services (SWIFT) to three more Russian credit institutions.

The EU suspends the broadcasting activities of three other Russian state-owned media in the EU.

The EU is also expanding the list of persons and entities affected by export restrictions on dual-use items and technology. Both Russian and Belarusian organisations have been added to the list. Furthermore, the EU has expanded the list of goods and technologies that could contribute to the technological improvement of the Russian defence and security sector. The additions include 80 chemicals that can be used for the production of chemical weapons.

The EU has banned the provision of accounting, public relations and consultancy services, as well as the provision of cloud services to Russia.

In addition, the European Council has decided to impose sanctions on further individuals and entities.
