On 27 July 2025, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump reached a political agreement on tariffs and trade.
The aim is to stabilise transatlantic trade, create planning security and secure jobs. The agreement is not yet legally binding and still needs to be finalised in further negotiations.
Key elements of the agreement:
15% tariff cap: A uniform maximum tariff rate of 15% will apply to almost all EU exports to the US. This also applies to passenger cars and car parts, pharmaceuticals and semiconductors.
Regulations for strategic products: US tariffs on aircraft and aircraft parts, certain chemicals, certain generic drugs and natural resources from the EU are to be reduced to the previous year's level.
Tariffs on steel, aluminium and copper: Tariffs are to be reduced and tariff quotas set for EU exports. The current tariff rate for these products is still 50%.
Access to critical energy: The EU plans to import energy products from the US worth around 750 billion US dollars in order to increase security of supply and replace Russian energy imports.
