On 26 March 2025, the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) of the US Department of Commerce announced that it had added 80 companies and organisations from China, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), South Africa, Iran, Taiwan and other countries to the US Entity List.
According to a press release from the BIS, the US decision is based on several security policy objectives. China's access to high-performance computers and quantum technologies is to be made more difficult in order to slow down military developments. In addition, progress in hypersonic weapons is to be deliberately slowed down.
The training of Chinese pilots in US technologies by the Test Flying Academy of South Africa (TFASA) is also to be stopped. At the same time, the US wants to prevent the transfer of drone technologies to Iran.
Finally, the measures aim to limit China's nuclear and missile programmes and prevent the military use of critical technologies.
