The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has published an updated version of "Don't Let This Happen to You!". In the July 2024 edition, BIS uses case studies to illustrate the consequences of violations of US export control law.
The current issue describes new cases, including a self-disclosure by an academic institution, violations of the antiboycott regulation, violations of export regulations relating to China and Iran, and non-compliance with a BIS settlement agreement. The BIS also lists incidents in the document that illustrate the strict rules for the export of firearms.
"Don't Let This Happen to You!" is intended to show exporting companies in which cases they are violating US export control law and how these violations can be avoided in advance. To this end, BIS provides tips and strategies in its publication to ensure compliance with US export control law. The BIS document is aimed in particular at exporters operating in high-risk regions or sectors.
Remember: European companies must also comply with US export control law, as the US enforces its export regulations worldwide and imposes sanctions for violations. A violation of US re-export control law can trigger risks that threaten the existence of a company, which is why it is important to introduce appropriate compliance programs!
