EU tightens sanctions against Belarus

The EU has again tightened its sanctions against Belarus. The expansion of sanctions against Belarus is intended to achieve greater alignment of sanctions against Russia and Belarus. According to the EU Commission, the sanctions measures are intended, among other things, to ensure that the sanctions already in place against Russia cannot be circumvented via Belarus.

The EU measures include sanctions against a further 38 individuals and three organisations.

The relevant legal acts, including the names of the persons concerned, have been published in the Official Journal (see end of news for links).

In response to Belarus' continued involvement in Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, the EU has also imposed targeted restrictive measures, namely:

• a ban on the export of goods and technology suitable for use in the aerospace industry, including aircraft engines and unmanned air vehicles
• a ban on the sale, supply, transfer or export of firearms, their essential components and ammunition
• further export restrictions on goods used by Russia in its war of aggression against Ukraine, including semiconductor devices, electronic integrated circuits, manufacturing and test equipment, cameras and optical components
• an extended export ban on dual-use goods and technologies

Belarus remains subject to restrictions in the areas of finance, trade, energy, transport and others.
